If you don’t know, we start at 0.68 dogs per home — all doors, including homes with no dog. That is the U.S. mix. Homes that already have a dog average 1.4–1.6. Override it anytime. Dogs alone fill waste and cleanup — homes can stay blank. Add homes if you want the Index (lb per home).

Check the math: AVMA 2025 U.S. pet ownership statistics — 42.6% of homes have a dog × 1.6 dogs in those homes ≈ 0.68 per door.

5 · What happens to dog poop?

It does not become free fertilizer

  1. On the ground Rain and irrigation move it. Bacteria and nutrients hitch a ride toward the nearest inlet. That is why cities call it a stormwater pollutant.
  2. In a bag, in a station Residents do the first pickup. The can is only half the job — someone still has to empty it and restock bags.
  3. On the truck Weekly service hauls it off the property. Left in an overflowing can, the “solution” is just a taller pile.
  4. In the trash stream Bagged waste belongs in municipal trash, not a storm drain, and not a backyard compost pile unless the system is built for pet waste.
